Distribute a graphic organizer for students to use organize the results of their research. Students will be given the option of using the distributed organizer or create one of their own.
Create four groups by having individuals select cards that are colored coded.
Review with students how to use Wiki as a collaborative tool. Encourage students to use Wiki or email to collaborate if they need to work outside of class time.
Instructional Activities
Students will take 10 minutes to discuss their prior knowledge about corporations that they are familiar with that have been in the news about corporations that were involved in financial scandals. This discussion will include defining ethics and business ethics as a review from what was discussed previously. Students will also be given suggested names of corporations that they may want to research.
Students will use 20-30 minutes to respond to a handout where they can create good questions to research about accounting scandals that have taken place in the past ten years.
Students will work in groups to locate articles that give results to their inquiry about accounting scandals. They will use two class periods to complete this. The groups may decide how they want to record the research results using a word processing to create notes; Inspiration software to create graphic organizers, or index cards.
Students will create a digital storytelling activity to present the results of their research before their peers.
Assessments and Monitor
Students will turn in their graphic organizers. I will conference with each group about the results from their completed organizers before they begin their digital storytelling activity.
Students will present their results of the research using a website such as toondoo.com.
Students will complete a word document writing a one or two-paragraph summary that describes what happened and the individuals involved.
